Ed Felton, a former federal chief technology officer and professor of computer science, will be joining the Obama administration as the next Deputy U.S. CTO, officials announced Monday.
Felton will be joining a growing team of technologists in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, working directly under Federal CTO Megan Smith.

“Ed’s experience in the intersection of public affairs and computer science has led him to experiences in government, academia and advising,” Smith and OSTP CTO Alexander Macgillivray wrote in a blog post announcing the appointment. “We are so pleased to welcome Ed to our team.”
Felten is currently a professor of Computer Science and Public Affairs at Princeton University, a position he’s held since 2005. Previously, he served as the FTC’s first CTO.
He holds a bachelor’s degree in physics from California Institute of Technology and earned a master’s and doctorate in computer science and engineering from the University of Washington.
