Sen. Mark R. Warner, D-Va., has requested that more than three-dozen federal agencies submit updates on Digital Accountability and Transparency (DATA) Act implementation plans, which outline how each agency is working to comply with the financial transparency reporting law.
In a letter sent to the agencies, Warner recognizes concerns previously voiced to the DATA Act’s final implementation guidance from the Office of Management and Budget and the Department of the Treasury (issued May 3).
These framework challenges included resource constraints and issues related to legacy financial management systems. But with the necessary transparency tools now available, agencies have the technical schema to aid in converting financial management information into open data per the 2014 bipartisan legislation, authored by Warner.
“The DATA Act presents both challenges and opportunities for your agency, and when fully implemented will create transparency for federal funds, set governmentwide financial data standards, reduce reporting requirements of federal award recipients, and improve overall data quality,” Warner said in the letter. “The efforts of each agency are essential to achieving the aims of this law. As I introduced this law in Congress, I remain strongly committed to robust oversight of DATA Act implementation and to ensuring that federal agencies are able to fully implement this crucial law.”
